For some, it’s a day filled with gratitude and joy, celebrating the dads who have been present and supportive. For others, it’s a day of pain, resentment, and hurt, reflecting on the fathers who were absent or imperfect. As Pastor Brandon Petty reminds us in his recent sermon, there’s only one perfect Father: our Heavenly Father.

Pastor Brandon sheds light on an important issue in our culture today—the diminishing role of fathers. Society often paints a minimalistic picture of dads, reducing their significance to grilling and watching sports. But Pastor Brandon urges us to see beyond this stereotype. In his church, there are men who lead their homes with faith, integrity, and strength. These men are not just fathers; they are leaders, fighters, and spiritual guides.

One inspiring story Brandon shared was about Randy, a man who, less than a year ago, wasn’t involved in church and didn’t know Jesus. Today, Randy and his family are being transformed by faith. It started with Randy and his eldest son finding salvation and has since spread to his entire household. This transformation illustrates a powerful truth: as the father goes, so goes the family.

Pastor Brandon’s own journey reflects this message of transformation. Coming from a background riddled with addiction, abuse, and brokenness, he has seen Jesus resurrect his family tree. He likens his experience to the story of Joseph naming his son Manasseh, which means "the Lord has caused me to forget all of the brokenness and heartache." Pastor Brandon emphasizes that it's not just about forgetting the past but healing and becoming better.

He warns us about the dangers of escapism when facing life’s challenges. Men often escape to vices like pornography, work, or other relationships instead of confronting their issues head-on. This avoidance creates more dysfunction. True strength comes from facing these challenges and clinging to faith.

Pastor Brandon also highlights the importance of community. Deep, meaningful relationships are essential, especially for men who might otherwise believe they don't need anyone. Surrounding ourselves with a strong, faith-driven community can help us overcome life’s sifts and remain steadfast in our purpose.

Ultimately, Pastor Brandon’s message is one of hope and resilience. When we are sifted—when life shakes us to our core—our true focus, or Telos, is revealed. Clinging to Jesus, we can endure the trials and emerge stronger. The key is to shift our mindset: from pride to humility, from isolation to community, and from despair to hope.

So this Father’s Day, let’s honor the fathers who lead with faith and strength. Let’s support those who are striving to break generational curses and create a better future for their families. And let’s remember that, as Pastor Brandon says, our true hope is secure in Jesus.

I have a bit of a fun side note before diving into today's topic. While many people write deep theological or leadership books, I write children's books about squirrels. Seriously, that’s not a joke! Last year, I brought my book here, and it’s still sitting in the Orange Room, untouched. So thanks for that, Generation Church!

Speaking of books, I have a new Christmas book out, and I’d be honored if you’d consider it for your holiday stocking stuffers. And hey, Christmas is just 199 days away, so no rush, right?

Now, let’s get into the heart of today’s message: loving your neighbor and standing firm in your faith, even when it’s counter-cultural.

Last week, Pastor Brandon delivered an A+ message, and I hope to follow up with at least a B-minus today. Let’s dive into the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a theologian and martyr who stood against the tide of Nazi Germany.

Bonhoeffer was deeply influenced by his time in Harlem, where he experienced vibrant worship and a dependence on God that profoundly impacted him. Upon returning to Germany, he faced the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime. Hitler, a charismatic leader, used sophisticated propaganda to shift societal norms and vilify the Jewish people, portraying them as subhuman.

Bonhoeffer recognized the danger of compromising biblical truths in the face of cultural pressure. He saw the church's passivity and decided to take a stand, knowing it would cost him dearly. His resistance to the Nazis led to his imprisonment and eventual execution just before the end of World War II.

Bonhoeffer’s story is a powerful reminder of the cost of discipleship. His words, “The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children,” challenge us to consider the legacy we’re creating.

We face similar challenges today, with cultural pressures questioning, distorting, and denying biblical truths. Just as Hitler’s propaganda slowly eroded societal values, today’s media can subtly shape our beliefs. It’s crucial to stay grounded in Scripture and not fall prey to these distortions.

The Bible recounts how Satan used a three-pronged attack—question, distort, and deny—in the Garden of Eden, and this strategy remains effective today. In Genesis, Satan asked Eve, “Did God really say…?” This questioning led her to distort God’s command, ultimately leading to sin.

We see similar tactics today, with society questioning fundamental biblical principles. It’s vital to know the Word of God deeply, so we’re not easily deceived.

Bonhoeffer’s unwavering stand against the Nazi regime, despite knowing the cost, serves as a powerful example for us. He refused to compromise, even when the church around him remained passive. His legacy challenges us to stand firm in our faith and teach our children to do the same.

As Bonhoeffer said, “The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children.” Let’s ensure we leave a legacy of faithfulness, standing firm in the truth, even when it’s counter-cultural.

So, how do we love our neighbor in today’s society? By standing for the truth and training the next generation in the Word of God. We have the same power that closed the mouths of lions and protected Paul. Let’s harness that power and make a stand.

Jesus promised He would be with us always, even to the end of time. So, let’s leave a moral society that points to God, resisting the culture of compromise. We need you, men and women of faith, to stand up and make a difference.

Remember, you can’t win this fight on your own. But with God, all things are possible. Let’s stand firm and love our neighbor by leaving a legacy of faith and truth.

Lewis, is well-known for his Narnia series. But beyond that magical world, he penned a profound book called The Weight of Glory. In it, he writes, "You have never talked to a mere mortal." This powerful statement speaks to the divine potential in every person.

Lewis reminds us that every individual we encounter carries the essence of the Creator. They are crafted in the image of God, not as gods themselves, but as beings with inherent majesty and purpose. Each human interaction is more than a random encounter; it's a divine appointment. The apostle Paul even suggests that sometimes, we might be entertaining angels without knowing it.

Think about it. Every person, regardless of their background, skin color, or life story, has a unique DNA. We often overlook the beauty in these encounters, categorizing people based on their worthiness of our time and energy. But every human being is a reflection of God’s intentional and loving creation.

This idea hit home during my first silent retreat at a monastery in Kentucky. One evening, I listened to a monk share his story. Growing up poor in the Philippines, he stole $22,000 that his father had painstakingly saved. This act of theft deeply affected his family, especially his mother. It was a powerful reminder of the impact our actions have on others, and the importance of acknowledging and thanking those who invest in our lives.

Reflecting on this, I realized that we often miss the opportunity to be truly compassionate neighbors. We tend to ask, "Who is my neighbor?" instead of, "How can I be a neighbor?" Jesus reframed this question in the parable of the Good Samaritan. The Samaritan helped a Jewish man in need, despite deep-seated enmity between their people. He saw the man as a fellow human, not defined by race or religion, but by his immediate need.

In our daily lives, we might encounter people in difficult situations. We might feel uncomfortable and look away, hoping someone else will help. Yet, it's through these moments that our true compassion is tested. It's not about instant gratification or seeing immediate results from our actions. It's about consistent, compassionate ministry, day after day, year after year.

A pastor I met in Costa Rica exemplified this. He spent nights on the streets with the homeless, creating a safe and clean space for them. His actions showed that true compassion involves risk, effort, and a willingness to meet people where they are, regardless of their circumstances.

We are called to live out the gospel by loving our neighbors as ourselves. This means every encounter is an opportunity to show compassion, to see the divine potential in others, and to act with kindness and love. Let’s not just fill seats in our churches, but fill needs in our communities. In doing so, we truly embody the message of Christ.

As you go about your day, remember that each person you meet is more than just a passerby. They are a divine creation, worthy of your time and compassion. Let’s strive to be neighbors in the fullest sense, showing love and kindness to all we encounter.
May we respond to this call with open hearts and hands. Amen.

I loved playing basketball, even though I wasn’t very good at it. One day, I made a rookie mistake with B-Freeze, a muscle cream that burns if you don’t wash it off properly. I didn’t, and ended up running down the court like a maniac. It’s funny in hindsight, but at the time, it was a painful lesson. Much like how we look back on the Israelites' constant struggle with idol worship in the Old Testament.

You see, throughout the Old Testament, we see the Israelites repeatedly warned against idol worship. Despite these warnings, they continued to bow down to idols. It seems baffling until we realize that modern idols aren’t always statues; they can be anything we prioritize over God.

In the Bible, King David’s grandson, Rehoboam, refused wise counsel, leading to Israel’s downfall and exile. Then comes Josiah, who became king at just eight years old. Imagine an eight-year-old leading a nation! Despite his youth, Josiah rediscovered God's law, lost for years, and led a covenant renewal with God, turning the people's hearts back to Him.

Josiah’s story reminds us that no matter how far we stray, God’s word can guide us back. It's like finding an old family recipe that brings everyone together around the table. When Josiah’s people found the Torah, it was like they were rediscovering their spiritual heritage.

This renewal wasn't just a fleeting moment. Josiah’s actions had lasting effects. His reforms led to the purging of idols and a renewed commitment to God’s commands. This transformation was so profound that even Daniel, a few generations later, stood firm in his faith amidst great trials.

Daniel's faithfulness, along with his peers like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, shows the power of a generational commitment to God. They refused to bow to idols, even under threat of death, because their forefathers had instilled a deep reverence for God in them.

So what does this mean for us today? It’s a call to examine our lives and see what idols we might be holding onto. Is it our career, our social status, or perhaps even our own comfort? These can all become idols if they take the place of God in our hearts.

Renewing our covenant with God isn’t just a personal act but a generational one. It impacts our children and their children. Like Josiah, we have the opportunity to rediscover God’s word and make it the cornerstone of our lives. This sets a foundation for future generations to build upon.

In practical terms, this means engaging in spiritual disciplines like prayer, solitude, and studying scripture. Start small and be consistent. As you grow in these practices, they become a natural rhythm in your life.

And if you’re a parent or grandparent, or involved in youth ministry, share these practices with the next generation. Teach them the value of a life dedicated to God. Books like "Practicing the Way" by John Mark Comer can be great resources for this journey.

Let’s make a commitment today to break free from our modern idols and renew our covenant with God. As we do, we not only transform our own lives but also leave a legacy of faith for those who come after us.

I’m Preston Owens, and my family and I moved here from Southeast Missouri back in August 2018. Over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of serving in various ministries at Generation Church. About a year ago, we felt called back to Missouri, to a small town named Dexter. Despite the challenges of leaving, we knew this was where God wanted us to be.

Reflecting on our journey, I’m reminded of a question my parents often asked: “If everyone jumped off a cliff, would you do it too?” This brings to mind a story from 2005 in Turkey where 1,500 sheep followed each other off a cliff. Surprisingly, only 450 died because the initial ones cushioned the fall for the rest. This incident underscores the need for leadership—without a shepherd, sheep are lost and vulnerable.

This ties into Jesus' ministry. He was moved by compassion when He saw crowds of people who were like sheep without a shepherd. Compassion, a defining trait of Jesus, is more than just feeling pity or empathy. It compels us to act, to alleviate the suffering we see.
Jesus saw the condition of the crowds—they were confused and helpless. This observation led Him to urge His followers to pray for more laborers to tend to the spiritual needs of the people. This wasn’t about amassing a larger following but about creating more shepherds to guide the lost.

Every believer is called to be part of the solution. We’re all tasked with representing Jesus in our daily lives and praying for more workers in the harvest. You might be the answer to someone’s prayer, called to step into a role you never imagined.

When I was 16, a health scare led me to a deeper commitment to Christ. At a summer camp, I felt a strong call to ministry. Sometimes, we hesitate to dive into what God calls us to do, but Jesus uses a powerful term in Matthew 9:38. The Greek word “ebalo” means to thrust or throw out. It’s a call to action, urging us not to wait but to jump in and serve.

Churches often face a sending problem rather than a calling problem. We need to be willing to step out of our comfort zones and into God’s plan, even if it means things get a bit messy.

So, let’s stand together, pray earnestly for more workers, and be open to the possibility that we might be the ones God is sending. Jesus first calls us to Himself, and from there, He sends us out to make a difference.

What will we look back on 20 years from now? Let’s be a church that raises leaders, pastors, and missionaries, impacting the world because we answered the call to pray and act.

Seriously, it's like they're multiplying like rabbits! But hey, congrats, GC, on reaching double digits!

Now, let's talk about Mother's Day. It's supposed to be this joyful occasion, right? But for some of us, it's not all roses and chocolates. I remember one Mother's Day when I received a card from Preston with the Monopoly guy on the front, repurposed for the occasion. Yeah, not exactly the heartfelt sentiment I was expecting.

But beyond the superficial celebrations, Mother's Day stirred up some deeper questions for me. Questions like, "God, why are we here in Missouri? Can we go back to Tennessee, please?" Ever been there? In that place of wrestling with God, questioning His plans, and feeling utterly lost?

Enter the prophet Habakkuk. This guy had his fair share of doubts and frustrations. He looked around at the chaos and injustice in his world and cried out to God, "Why aren't you doing something about this?"

Sound familiar? It's like when life throws you a curveball, and you're left wondering if God's even paying attention.

But here's the thing about wrestling with God: it's okay. In fact, it's more than okay—it's necessary. Because in those moments of wrestling, we're forced to confront our doubts, fears, and uncertainties head-on. And that's where the real transformation happens.

Habakkuk didn't stop at wrestling, though. He also embraced. He shifted from questioning God's plans to trusting in His sovereignty. Even when nothing seemed fair and disaster loomed on the horizon, Habakkuk chose to rejoice in the Lord.

And that's the heart of it, isn't it? Choosing to worship even when we don't understand, even when our circumstances scream otherwise. It's saying, "God, I don't know what the future holds, but I trust that You hold it in Your hands."

So whether you're in a season of wrestling, embracing, or waiting, know this: you're not alone. God sees you, He hears you, and He's right there beside you, every step of the way.

If you're feeling that void of peace today, if you're wrestling with hard questions or struggling to trust God's plan, know that there's hope. True peace isn't found in perfect circumstances or easy answers. It's found in a person—Jesus Christ.

So whatever path you're on today, whether it's one of wrestling, embracing, or waiting, know that there's a community here ready to walk alongside you. And above all, know that there's a God who loves you more deeply than you can imagine, who longs to embrace you in His arms and fill you with His peace.

Yep, I see you nodding. We've all been there, especially when it comes to setting aside time for prayer or meditation. Let me share a little story that might resonate with you.

So, picture this: it's a serene Sunday morning, and I'm all geared up for some quality time with the divine. I settle into my prayer spot, ready to bask in the presence of God. But guess what pops into my head the moment I close my eyes? Bon Jovi. Yes, you heard that right. Instead of heavenly visions, I'm hit with "Shot through the heart, and you're to blame..." You see, even amidst our best intentions, distractions have a funny way of sneaking in.

But here's the kicker: it's not just about Bon Jovi or the random musings that pop up. Our modern lives are bombarded with information overload. From the moment we wake up, we're inundated with notifications, emails, and endless to-do lists. No wonder it's hard to find stillness, especially in the presence of God.

It's a struggle we all face—being fully present. Our minds wander to the past, replaying old memories, or leap into the future, fretting over what's to come. But here's the thing: true transformation begins when we prioritize the presence of God.

What does that mean, exactly? It's about being fully aware of God's presence in every moment of our lives, not just during the Sunday experience. It's about recognizing that God is with us at work, at home, and yes, even during those mundane daily tasks.

Think about it: Mary, in the Bible, chose to sit at Jesus' feet while Martha busied herself with chores. And Jesus didn't condemn Martha for her busyness, but he praised Mary for choosing the better part—being present with him.

So, how do we prioritize the presence in our daily lives? It starts with prayer. Not just the rushed, last-minute kind, but intentional, heartfelt prayer. Take a moment to praise God for who he is, pour out your heart in thanksgiving, and present your requests with faith.

But prayer isn't just a solo act. It's about coming together as a community, sharing our burdens, and lifting each other up. It's about creating space for play, laughter, and genuine connection, both with God and with one another.

And let's not forget the power of sharing a meal. There's something sacred about breaking bread together, about the fellowship and communion that happens around the table. It's a tangible reminder of God's presence among us.

Ultimately, it's about living authentically, without the pressure to perform or conform to societal expectations. It's about being fully present, just as Jesus was—fully present in our joys and our sorrows, in our struggles and our triumphs.

So, as you go about your day, I encourage you to prioritize the presence of God. Take a moment to breathe, to be still, and to know that he is with you always, guiding you, sustaining you, and transforming you from the inside out.

Because in the end, it's not about what we do, but about who we are in his presence.

Prayer-Hand-Resource.pdf

As we journey through the fourth week of our series on rediscovering the essence of church, let's delve into the core values and purposes that shape our beloved community.

You might wonder, what does it truly mean to be devoted to the local church? Is it merely about showing up for Sunday service and going through the motions, or does it run deeper, permeating the very fabric of who we are?

For some, like myself, the journey to devotion wasn't a straight path. I recall my younger days, filled with obligatory church activities that felt more like a chore than a source of spiritual nourishment. Hypocrisy and personal trauma cast shadows over my perception of organized religion, leaving me questioning the authenticity of it all.

Yet, amidst the doubts and disillusionment, a glimmer of hope emerged. Romans 8:28 whispered truths of redemption, reminding me that even amidst the darkest moments, God works tirelessly to shape us into vessels of His love and grace.

It wasn't until a pivotal sermon in San Antonio that the tide began to turn. The pastor's words struck a chord within me, emphasizing that God doesn't need us, but He invites us to partake in His divine plan. That invitation sparked a transformation, leading my wife and me to actively engage in church life, from choir practice to community outreach.

But devotion isn't just about filling pews or ticking off checkboxes on a religious to-do list. It's about fostering genuine connections, both with our Creator and with fellow believers. It's about prioritizing time, talents, and resources to serve a higher purpose, transcending the boundaries of self-interest.

The early Christians embodied this spirit of devotion, meeting in homes, sharing meals, and supporting one another in times of need. Their unwavering commitment to the collective mission of spreading God's love serves as a timeless blueprint for us to emulate.

In today's fast-paced world, where distractions abound and isolation looms as a silent adversary, the call to devotion rings louder than ever. We're reminded of Hebrews 10:25, urging us not to forsake gathering together, especially as the day of Christ's return draws nearer.

So, as we ponder what it means to be devoted to the local church, let's reflect on our priorities. Does our calendar reflect our commitment to God and His people? Are we willing to relinquish control and embrace a lifestyle of generosity and service?

Ultimately, the choice to embrace devotion lies in our hands. It's a conscious decision to align our hearts with God's will, allowing His Spirit to mold us into vessels of His love and grace.

As we embark on this journey of rediscovery, may we choose wisely, knowing that true devotion transcends mere actions—it becomes an intrinsic part of who we are.

Let's recommit ourselves to the vibrant tapestry of Christian community, knowing that together, we embody the heart of God's transformative love.

Maybe you've sat in a pew, flipping through the pages of your Bible, wondering if there's more to this journey of faith than meets the eye.

Well, my friends, buckle up because today we're diving into the heart of what it means to pursue spiritual formation. But before we get into the nitty-gritty, let me take a moment to shout out Pastor Tyler for his stellar sermon last week. Seriously, that guy's like a Swiss Army knife of talent, from preaching to leading worship for the kiddos – he's the real MVP.

Now, let's turn our attention to Philippians chapter 2, starting at verse 5. Here, Paul urges us to adopt the mindset of Christ Jesus, who, despite his divine nature, humbled himself to serve humanity. It's a powerful reminder that true greatness is found in humility and service.

But wait, there's a pivotal word in verse 12 that often gets overlooked – "therefore." Whenever you spot a "therefore" in Scripture, it's like a neon sign pointing to the connection between two ideas. In this case, Paul is urging us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, not as a means of earning it, but as a response to the transformative work of God within us.

And let's talk about transformation for a minute. It's easy to get caught up in the external trappings of religion – the rituals, the routines – without experiencing real, heart-deep change. As Bono once said, "Fewer things are harder to put up with than the annoyance of a good example." Ouch, right? But it's true. Authentic transformation isn't just about putting on a show; it's about allowing God to shape us from the inside out.

Now, here's where things get real. We live in a world that's constantly bombarding us with distractions – social media, materialism, you name it. And let's be honest, sometimes we're more interested in looking good on the outside than doing the hard work of spiritual growth.

But here's the kicker: spiritual formation isn't a passive process. It requires both dependence on the Holy Spirit and discipline on our part. Think of it like getting in shape. You can have the best trainer in the world, but if you're not willing to put in the sweat and tears, you're not gonna see results.

And speaking of discipline, let's talk about the desert fathers. These ancient monks were the OGs of counter-cultural living, rejecting the diluted version of Christianity that was all the rage in their day. They understood that true spiritual formation requires intentional, counter-cultural living – a radical commitment to putting Christ first in every aspect of our lives.

So, where do we go from here? Well, first off, let's ditch the idea that spiritual growth is just about adding more stuff to our already-packed schedules. Instead, let's make room for what truly matters – knowing Christ on a deeper level.

And hey, if you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start, don't sweat it. We've got resources and tools to help you on your journey, from prayer guides to practical tips for cultivating spiritual habits.

So, here's the challenge: let's embrace the messy, beautiful journey of spiritual formation. Let's lean into the discomfort, knowing that God is at work in us, shaping us into the image of Christ. And let's do it not just for ourselves, but for the glory of God and the benefit of others.

Are you ready to embark on this adventure with me? Let's pursue spiritual formation together, one step at a time.

developing-rule-of-life2023.pdf

I know, I know, you might be thinking, "Wait, what's all this buzz about Next Gen Ministry?" Well, buckle up because we're about to delve into some enlightening insights that might just reshape your perspective on youth engagement in the church.

First off, let me introduce myself. I'm Tyler, and yeah, I'm that guy who tends to ask a lot of questions. But hey, that's how we learn and grow, right? So, here's the deal: we're living in the year 2024, and things are, well, let's just say, intriguing. As a church community, we've seen our fair share of changes over the years. From the Jesus movement to the evolution of youth engagement strategies, we've adapted, we've grown, and we've learned.

But here's the kicker—sometimes, during all the changes, we tend to lose sight of the core values that drive us. That's where the concept of Next Gen Ministry comes into play. It's about more than just rounding up the youth for Wednesday night gatherings or organizing sports camps. It's about fighting for the lost, addicted, and disconnected souls of the Next Generation.

Now, let's address the elephant in the room—parenting. Yep, you heard me right. Whether you're a seasoned parent, a soon-to-be parent, or simply someone with a heart for the youth, this is relevant to you. See, here's the thing: our kids are being shaped and molded every single day, whether we realize it or not. And guess what? We play a pivotal role in that shaping process.

Imagine for a moment if we invested as much time and energy into nurturing their spiritual growth as we do in their extracurricular activities. Imagine if conversations around the dinner table weren't just about earthly accomplishments but delved into the depths of their spiritual journey.

But hey, I get it. Parenting is tough. It's a constant juggling act of responsibilities, commitments, and, let's be real, exhaustion. But here's a gentle reminder—our kids aren't just ours. They're gifts entrusted to us by a higher power, and one day, we'll have to give an account of how we stewarded that gift.

So, how can we win at discipleship within our homes and communities? It starts with intentionality. It starts with being present, both physically and spiritually. It starts with fostering an environment where faith isn't just a Sunday ritual but a lived experience.

And guess what? You don't have to be a parent to make a difference. Each one of us has a story to tell, a testimony to share. Whether it's through mentoring, volunteering, or simply lending a listening ear, we all have a part to play in shaping the future of our youth.

So, as we navigate this journey of rediscovery, let's commit to being intentional in our discipleship efforts. Let's prioritize spiritual growth alongside earthly pursuits. Let's be the generation that invests not just in our own success but in the eternal legacy we leave behind.

Together, let's rediscover Next Gen Ministry and unlock the boundless potential of our youth in the church.

Picture this: an elementary school auditorium filled with eager souls, some sitting on the floor, others on vintage seats from 1977. Yep, that was the humble beginning of our church.

Reflecting on those early days, I'm struck by the sheer determination of those who showed up. Parents dropping off their kids amidst makeshift barriers of orange construction plastic, hungry for a moment's respite while we embarked on something new.

From those initial gatherings, peppered with mishaps like basketball goals gone rogue and the occasional accident report, to our more recent endeavors, it's been quite the ride. We've dabbled in all sorts of tactics to draw folks in, striving to be a modern, attractional church. But amidst the craziness, a deeper realization began to dawn on me.

You see, my own journey of faith took a turn. After experiencing personal loss and soul-searching, I found myself yearning for something more than just surface-level attraction. I craved authentic discipleship, a genuine walk with Jesus that transcended mere Sunday gatherings and catchy slogans.

And so, our church evolved. We delved into the depths of Scripture, uncovering truths that had long been overlooked. We challenged ourselves to move beyond the comfortable confines of religious routine and embrace a radical pursuit of Christ-likeness.

But change is never easy. It's a constant struggle, fraught with doubts and uncertainties. As a pastor, I often find myself wrestling with the weight of responsibility, wondering if I'm leading my flock down the right path.

Yet, amidst the challenges, there's a glimmer of hope. A hope rooted in the transformative power of community, in the shared journey of fellow believers walking alongside each other, spurring one another on towards love and good deeds.

You see, church isn't just a place we go to on Sundays. It's a living, breathing organism, a vibrant community of faith where each member plays a vital role in the body of Christ.

So, as we gather around the table, as we break bread and share in the Lord's Supper, let's not lose sight of the true essence of our calling. Let's embrace the journey of discipleship, with all its twists and turns, knowing that He who began a good work in us will carry it on to completion.

And so let's press on, with hearts ablaze for the gospel, with a zeal for Jesus and a passion for His kingdom. For in Him alone do we find the real, abundant life we so desperately seek.

P.S. If this post resonated with you, I'd love to hear your thoughts! Imagine wandering through the ancient streets of a city where history, faith, and culture collide.

Yes, I'm talking about Jerusalem, a city divided into four quarters, each pulsating with its unique energy. But amidst the divisions and tensions, there's a place that transcends all boundaries – the Garden Tomb.

Now, picture this: as you meander through the bustling streets, you stumble upon vendors peddling wares, each trying to capture a piece of the spiritual essence that permeates the air. It's a surreal experience, to witness the commercialization of something as sacred as Christianity. But amid the chaos, there's a beacon of hope – the Garden Tomb, where believers gather to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

But let's pause for a moment and ponder the significance of this empty tomb. It's not just a historical relic; it's a symbol of hope, redemption, and new beginnings. For centuries, skeptics have tried to debunk the resurrection, but the evidence speaks for itself – the tomb is empty, and Jesus is alive!

Now, you might be wondering, what's the big deal about the resurrection anyway? Well, let me tell you, it's a game-changer. It's not just about a man rising from the dead; it's about the transformational power of faith and redemption.

Think about it – if Jesus conquered death, what's stopping us from living a life of purpose and meaning? His resurrection isn't just a one-time event; it's an invitation to participate in something greater than ourselves. It's a call to action, a rallying cry to spread the message of hope to the ends of the earth.

And let's not forget about the radical restoration that comes with believing in the resurrection. It's not just about life after death; it's about experiencing God's transformative power here and now. It's about being liberated from the chains of sin and embracing a life of freedom and abundance.

So, my friends, as we celebrate Easter, let's remember the empty tomb and the profound implications it holds for our lives. Let's embrace the invitation to participation and live out our faith with boldness and conviction. And who knows, maybe one day, our lives will tell the story of a resurrected savior who changed everything.

In conclusion, I want to leave you with this simple yet profound truth – He is risen, indeed. Now go and tell others, and may you experience the power of the empty tomb in your own life.

P.S. Don't forget to share your story of resurrection power – it's an invitation to participation that can change lives!

But before we plunge into the depths of scripture, let me introduce myself—I'm Preston Brown, and It's a privilege to share this journey of faith with you all.

Now, let's rewind a bit to a vivid memory from my childhood—a time spent cruising in my dad's old red truck. Ah, the adventures we had! But beneath the surface of these cherished memories lies a valuable lesson: sometimes, we need to look beyond the obvious to grasp the full story. And isn't that true for so many aspects of our lives, including our understanding of biblical teachings?

Today, I want to unravel two pivotal questions that often go overlooked in the grand narrative of scripture: Why is the Lamb of God so significant? And who is Barabbas, really?

First things first, let's talk about Jesus as the Lamb of God. In the Gospel of John, we encounter John the Baptist's proclamation: "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29). But why a lamb? What's the significance of this symbol?

To comprehend this, we journey back to the book of Exodus, where animal sacrifices were instituted. These sacrifices weren't mere rituals—they held profound symbolism. The sacrificial lamb had to be spotless, without blemish, mirroring the purity of Jesus Christ.

Moreover, lambs represented the nature of the true Lamb to come—Jesus Christ Himself.
But there's more to it than meets the eye. Ever heard of the "sheep mentality"? Picture this: a line of sheep jumping over a non-existent barrier simply because the lead sheep did so.

It's a poignant reminder of our call to follow Jesus, our Good Shepherd, with unwavering trust.

Now, let's shift gears to Barabbas—a figure often overshadowed in the crucifixion narrative. In Hebrew, "bar" means "son of," while "abbas" translates to "father." So, Barabbas could be interpreted as "son of the father." Intriguing, isn't it?

During Jesus' trial, Pilate presents the crowd with a choice: to release either Jesus or Barabbas. The irony is stark—on one hand, stands Jesus, the epitome of love and grace; on the other, Barabbas, a criminal. Yet, the crowd chooses Barabbas's release, condemning Jesus to crucifixion.

But here's the kicker: aren't we all Barabbas? We, too, are sinners in need of redemption. Jesus, the true Son of the Father, willingly took our place on the cross, offering us salvation.
As we reflect on these profound truths, let's not fall into the trap of religious rituals devoid of genuine relationship with Christ. Jesus desires our hearts, not just our adherence to rituals.

Friends, the Lamb of God—Jesus Christ—is the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. His sacrifice covers us, reconciling us to God. So, I implore you, ponder this question: Is what Jesus did for you on the cross enough to transform your life?

In my own journey, I found that Jesus is indeed better. Better than empty pursuits, better than fleeting pleasures. Surrendering to Him brought true fulfillment and purpose to my life.

So, as we navigate life's twists and turns, let's remember: Jesus is better. And as we embrace His sacrifice, may we find true freedom and redemption.

Until next time, keep seeking, keep exploring, and keep embracing the transformative power of the Lamb of God.

Fast forward 11 years, and they're learning to drive for real. That Barbie Jeep was a fun gift, but it was just a shadow of the real thing. Similarly, Jesus confronts the religious leaders in Jerusalem because they're settling for a system that serves them but no longer serves God.

The temple, the focal point of worship, had become a mere shadow of its intended purpose. It was meant to point people to God, but instead, it became a symbol of how far they had strayed. Jesus, however, is the clear image the temple was meant to reflect. He came not to abolish but to fulfill the law, offering ultimate forgiveness and redemption.

But here's the kicker: Jesus didn't just condemn the religious leaders; He challenges us too. Just as they settled for less, we often do the same. We turn good things into idols, seeking fulfillment where it cannot be found. Jesus urges us to seek the true fruit of His presence, not just the outward appearance of religiosity.

Think about it like this: a fig tree may have lush leaves, but if it bears no fruit, it's worthless. Similarly, if our lives don't bear the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—then we're missing the mark.

Jesus came to build a new temple, not made of bricks and mortar, but of living stones—us, His followers. This temple isn't confined to a physical location but extends wherever His Spirit dwells. It's a temple built on the foundation of Jesus, the cornerstone, enduring through the ages.

So, here's the challenge: don't settle for the shadow. Don't just go through the motions of religion without experiencing the transformative power of a relationship with Christ. Abide in Him, let your roots grow deep, and bear fruit that glorifies God. That's where true fulfillment lies.

As we reflect on Jesus' challenge to the religious norms of His day, let's also examine our lives and ensure we're not settling for less than what He offers. Let's embrace the fullness of His love, grace, and truth, allowing it to permeate every aspect of our lives.
Remember, you're meant for so much more than mere shadows. Paradoxes are like little mysteries wrapped in contradictions yet holding profound truths within. From Shakespeare's enigmatic lines to George Orwell's political allegories, we've encountered paradoxes that challenge our understanding and perception. But have you ever pondered the paradoxes within the teachings of Jesus?

Let's embark on a journey through Mark 10, where Jesus unfolds layers of contrasting perspectives, revealing profound insights into life, salvation, and discipleship.

Jesus, the Contrasting King, challenges conventional wisdom by turning our earthly paradigms upside down. As he interacts with his disciples, we witness moments of clarity followed by confusion, highlighting the depth of his teachings.

In one encounter, a man approaches Jesus, addressing him as "good teacher." Jesus, in his response, unveils a deeper truth, reminding us that true goodness emanates from God alone. This interaction exposes the shallow view of salvation held by many—a transactional approach focused on deeds rather than transformation.

Moreover, the rich man's inquiry about eternal life exposes his surface-level understanding of the law. Jesus delves beyond external actions, revealing the covetousness lingering in the man's heart. It's a poignant reminder that true obedience stems from internal attitudes rather than outward displays.

As the conversation unfolds, we confront the allure of possessions and the commercialized version of the Gospel. Jesus's call to sell possessions and follow him challenges our priorities, urging us to seek God's glory above earthly gain.

But amidst the paradoxes lies a profound truth: the Gospel we live in is the Gospel we live out. If our understanding of salvation remains transactional, we risk missing out on the transformative power of discipleship. It's not merely about securing a spot in heaven but experiencing union with God and embodying unconditional love.

Furthermore, Jesus's call to relinquish possessions echoes throughout generations, inviting us to examine what truly possesses our hearts. Whether it's wealth, status, or approval, Jesus beckons us to prioritize his kingdom over earthly treasures.

In essence, Jesus invites us into a life of paradoxical beauty, where surrender leads to abundance and humility to exaltation. It's a journey marked by repentance, a willingness to align our hearts with God's will, and a radical reorientation of our priorities.

So, as we reflect on Jesus's teachings in Mark 10, let's embrace the paradoxes with open hearts and minds. For within the seeming contradictions lies the profound wisdom of our Contrasting King, guiding us toward a life of eternal significance.

Are you ready to unravel the paradox and embark on a transformative journey with Jesus? If you've been following along, you know that Mark isn't just about the words of Jesus but also about his actions—his works that speak volumes about who he is.

So, let's do a quick recap of where we've been and where we're headed. In the past weeks, we've uncovered layers of understanding about Jesus. We've seen him not just as a promised Messiah for Israel but as the Savior of the world, a servant King who flips the script on what royalty means. He's our guide, leading us through the waters of baptism, echoing the journey of Moses and Joshua but ultimately leading us to new life.

Then, there's the revelation that Jesus is our Sabbath rest, ushering in a new covenant that includes all of humanity, forming a new family known as the church. We've marveled at how a small band of disciples grew into a global family over two millennia, and we've learned what it truly means to be adopted into this family through the teachings and training of Jesus.

Last week, we hit a pivotal moment when Jesus asked his disciples, "Who do you say that I am?" It's a question that still reverberates through the ages, challenging us to make a choice that will shape our lives for eternity.

And now, we stand at the threshold of another significant moment: the Transfiguration. This isn't just a flashy party trick or a cool magic show. It's a profound revelation that ties together the threads of the Hebrew Bible with the life and mission of Jesus.

You see, from the very beginning, humanity was created in the image of God—the imago Dei. But sin tarnished that image, leading us astray from our intended purpose of reflecting God's glory. Through the failures of priests and prophets, we lost sight of our true identity.

But then, along comes Jesus, the embodiment of God's glory in human form. In the Transfiguration, as Moses and Elijah fade away, Jesus stands alone as the fulfillment of the law and the prophets. He's not just another prophet or teacher—he's the shining reflection of God's glory, revealing to us our true identity as children of God.

And here's the best part: through Jesus, the veil is lifted. We no longer have to hide in shame or fear. Instead, we can boldly reflect God's glory in our lives, shining brightly as beacons of hope and love in a world filled with darkness.

So, as we continue on this journey through Mark, let's remember who we are and whose we are. Let's embrace our identity as shiny reflections of God's glory, letting his light shine through us in every word, deed, and thought.

And if you're feeling weighed down by shame or guilt, remember that Jesus came to set you free. His grace is more than enough to wash away your past and restore you to a right relationship with God. So, let go of the old and step into the new life he offers—a life filled with purpose, joy, and the radiant glow of his love.

Sacrifices, chants, and beliefs in deities residing beneath the earth— it's chilling, to say the least.

Now, fast forward to Jesus dropping a bombshell question: "Who do you say that I am?" Peter's response, "You are the Messiah," sets the stage for a paradigm shift. But hold up, Peter's got it half-right; Jesus isn't just their idea of a savior. He's the real deal, here to redefine everything.

You see, Jesus isn't here to meet expectations; he's here to redefine them. He challenges our warped views of the "good life," exposing sin as a twisted version of true flourishing. It's a tale as old as Adam and Eve, where the allure of autonomy led to ruin.

Peter's confession triggers a lightbulb moment: Jesus isn't just another player in their narrative; he's the game-changer. Yet, Peter's vision is clouded by earthly desires for power and victory.

But here's the kicker: Jesus flips the script on what it means to win. It's not about domination or revenge; it's about self-sacrifice. And in a world obsessed with power grabs, that's countercultural.

Think about it: surrendering to Jesus means letting go of our selfish pursuits and embracing a life of service. It's about flipping the script on what truly matters and realizing that chasing worldly success is like grasping at smoke.

So, what's the takeaway? The gateway to the good life isn't found in hoarding wealth or seeking revenge; it's found in surrendering to something greater. It's about laying down our swords and embracing a radical love that transcends borders and ideologies.

Sure, it's a tough pill to swallow, especially in a world hell-bent on division and conquest. But maybe, just maybe, Jesus is onto something here. Maybe true victory isn't found in conquering others but in conquering ourselves.

As we journey through Mark's narrative, let's not just skim the surface; let's dive deep into the heart of the matter. Because, at the end of the day, the real battle isn't fought with swords and shields but with love and grace.

So, here's to embracing the messiness of life, to laying down our weapons, and to surrendering to the ultimate game-changer, Jesus Christ.

If so, you're not alone. The famous saying, "The struggle is real," resonates deeply with many of us. From giving up coffee for 21 days to facing personal challenges, each struggle shapes us in unique ways.

In a recent conversation, the idea of struggle took on new meaning for me. It dawned on me that sometimes, our struggles become our identity. We cling to them, using them as excuses or justifications for our actions. But what if there's more to our struggles than meets the eye?

Growing up, my family faced its share of challenges. Moving to a new town, navigating relationships, and financial hardships were all part of our journey. Yet, through it all, I learned invaluable lessons about perseverance, hard work, and gratitude. These experiences shaped my values and taught me to appreciate life's blessings.

But here's the catch: as a parent now, I worry that my own children won't experience the same struggles I did. I fear they'll miss out on the lessons that come from adversity. Yet, I've come to realize that struggles aren't meant to define us; they're meant to refine us.

In Mark 6, we see Jesus' disciples facing a literal storm at sea. Despite their efforts, they're unable to make headway against the wind and waves. In the midst of chaos, Jesus appears, walking on the water. At first, they mistake him for a ghost, a symbol of their fear and anxiety.

But Jesus reassures them, saying, "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid." In that moment, they recognize him for who he truly is: the one who brings calm to chaos, the one who walks with us through life's storms.

As I reflect on this story, I'm reminded that our struggles are not meant to drive us away from God but to draw us closer to Him. Like the disciples, we may initially fail to recognize Jesus in the midst of our storms. Yet, He is always there, ready to calm our fears and guide us through.

So how do we navigate life's struggles without losing sight of Jesus? It starts with recognizing His presence in our midst. Instead of allowing our struggles to consume us, let's invite Jesus into the chaos. Let's trust that He is working behind the scenes, using our trials to refine us and draw us closer to Him.

And let's not forget the importance of community in our journey. Just as the disciples found strength in each other's presence, we too can find support and encouragement in our spiritual family. Whether it's through prayer, fellowship, or simply sitting in silence, let's lean on one another as we navigate life's storms.

In conclusion, the next time you find yourself struggling against life's challenges, remember this: Jesus is not a distant observer but a present help in times of trouble. Embrace His presence, trust in His faithfulness, and find strength in the midst of struggle.

Together, let's discover the profound truth that in our weakest moments, Jesus is strongest. And in the chaos of life, His presence brings peace.

So take heart, dear friend, and do not be afraid. For in Jesus, we find strength, hope, and the courage to face whatever storms may come our way.

Are you among those who steadfastly believe, or perhaps you're unsure of what to believe? In the bustling crowd of humanity, each person holds onto something, whether it's faith in a higher power, trust in science and reason, or confidence in the everyday objects that shape our lives.

Consider for a moment the simple act of starting your car each morning. As you turn the key, do you ever doubt that it will roar to life, propelling you forward with confidence? Or when you flip the switch, do you worry if the lights will illuminate your home once more? These mundane yet essential acts are steeped in faith, a trust in the reliability of the mechanisms and systems we rely on.

But faith extends far beyond the realm of material objects. It intertwines with our beliefs, shaping our perceptions of the world and guiding our actions. Yet, faith can be a double-edged sword, capable of both uplifting and disillusioning us. Throughout history, wars have been fought and lives destroyed over misinterpretations of faith, highlighting the profound impact it can have on individuals and societies.

Growing up in a conservative Christian household, I witnessed firsthand the complexities of faith. From anointing oil to prayer shawls, I navigated the rituals and traditions that defined my community's beliefs. Yet, amidst the outward displays of faith, I grappled with doubts and uncertainties, questioning the true nature of my convictions.

In Mark 5:25-34, we encounter a woman whose faith transcended societal norms and religious traditions. For twelve years, she suffered in silence, ostracized by her community due to her debilitating condition. Yet, when she heard of Jesus' healing power, she dared to believe that a mere touch of his robe could bring about her restoration.

Her act of faith, though seemingly insignificant, unleashed a profound transformation. In reaching out to Jesus, she not only sought physical healing but also embraced a deeper spiritual truth. For in that moment of connection, she recognized Jesus as the embodiment of salvation, the source of true wholeness and restoration.

As we reflect on this powerful encounter, we are challenged to examine our own faith. Do we merely adhere to religious rituals and traditions, or do we truly believe in the transformative power of Jesus? Are we willing to step out in faith, even when it means venturing into the fringes of societal norms and expectations?

Faith, after all, is not confined to the comfortable confines of tradition but rather flourishes in the fertile soil of uncertainty and doubt. It is in those moments of vulnerability that we discover the true depth of our convictions and the boundless grace of a God who meets us where we are.

So, as we journey forward, may we embrace the fringes of faith, trusting in the healing and transformation that await us. And may we, like the woman in Mark 5, reach out with boldness and courage, knowing that in Jesus, our true restoration awaits.

In the end, it's not the rituals or traditions that define our faith, but the unwavering trust we place in the God who holds our lives in his hands.

Join me on this journey of discovery and transformation, as we explore the fringes of faith and encounter the boundless grace of a God who heals and restores.

Well, you're not alone. In fact, Pastor Brandon Petty has a confession to make – he's a bit of a control freak when it comes to driving. But hey, who can blame him? The roads can be chaotic, especially when you're not the one behind the wheel.

For Pastor Brandon, learning to trust his wife's driving was a journey in itself. Despite his initial reluctance, he's come to realize that relinquishing control doesn't mean disaster – it's actually quite liberating. And hey, his wife's spotless driving record is a testament to that!

But let's shift gears from the asphalt to the open waters of the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus and his disciples faced their own tempestuous trials. Just like Pastor Brandon's journey to trust his wife's driving, the disciples learned to trust in something greater – the unwavering presence of Jesus.

As Pastor Brandon unpacks this biblical tale, he draws parallels to our own lives. Just as the disciples found themselves in a boat buffeted by winds and waves, we too encounter storms that threaten to capsize our faith. But here's the kicker – when Jesus is in the boat, there's no need to fear.

So, what can we learn from this timeless tale? Well, first off, the boat becomes a pulpit for Jesus, a platform from which he imparts invaluable teachings to those willing to listen. Just imagine being on the shore, captivated by his words as he navigates the choppy waters of life's trials.

Secondly, just as Pastor Brandon discovered that trust outweighs worry, we too must learn to surrender control and place our faith in the one who calms the storm. It's a lesson easier said than done, but oh so worth it when we find peace amidst life's tumultuous seas.

And finally, prayer becomes our lifeline in times of trouble. Whether our faith is as steady as a rock or wavering like a ship in a storm, prayer anchors us to the unwavering presence of Jesus.

So as you journey through life's ups and downs, remember this – the boat of many colors represents our diverse experiences, each one a testament to the faithfulness of Jesus. So let's lean into trust, anchor ourselves in prayer, and weather life's storms together, knowing that Jesus is at the helm, guiding us safely to shore.

We've been on a quest to answer the fundamental question: who is this Jesus? What does it truly mean to follow him? And, perhaps most importantly, what is our response to his call?

If you're here and you're not quite sure about this whole Christianity thing, let me extend a warm welcome. This space is for everyone, no matter where you are on your faith journey. But for those of us who have chosen to follow Jesus, we know that reading through the scriptures is more than just skimming through stories. It's about encountering the life of Jesus, learning to walk as he walked, and discovering the true essence of discipleship.

Now, let's talk about causes. We're all committed to something, whether we realize it or not. Think about it: how do you spend your time, your money, your resources, and your relationships? All of these things reflect the cause that you're living for.

For some, it's all about sports. You've got the jerseys, the season tickets, and your Sundays revolve around game schedules. And hey, there's nothing inherently wrong with being passionate about your team, but let's not let it consume us.

Then there's the self-care craze. We're constantly on the hunt for the next miracle cream or pill that promises eternal youth. But let's face it, no amount of external fixes can truly satisfy our longing for fulfillment.

And of course, there's the pursuit of prosperity and success. We're constantly striving to climb the ladder, build our portfolios, and amass wealth. But at the end of the day, what does it all amount to?

Now, here's where it gets real. Some of us are fighting for noble causes—justice, equality, environmental conservation. But are our motives pure? Are we truly committed to making a difference, or are we just jumping on the bandwagon?

And then there are those who are searching for something more. Something beyond the material world. Something that gives life true meaning and purpose.

So, where does Jesus fit into all of this? Well, if we take a closer look at the Book of Mark, we'll see that Jesus is fighting for three distinct causes.

Firstly, he's establishing a new nation—not a political or geographical entity, but a community of believers bound together by their allegiance to Christ. This new nation transcends borders and bloodlines, offering hope and salvation to all who believe.

Secondly, Jesus is confronting the forces of evil and ushering in a new era of spiritual freedom. Through his death and resurrection, he defeats sin and death once and for all, offering us the promise of eternal life.

And finally, Jesus is calling us to discipleship. He's not looking for fans or followers; he's looking for apprentices—people who are willing to walk in his footsteps, to live as he lived, and to carry on his mission.

So, what does this mean for us? Well, it means that we need to move beyond mere attendance and embrace active engagement. We need to commit ourselves wholeheartedly to the cause of Christ, pressing in when others walk away, and submitting ourselves to the process of discipleship.

It won't be easy. It will require sacrifice and perseverance. But the reward far outweighs the cost. So let's make a choice today—to be more than just part of the crowd, but to be true disciples of Jesus, committed to living out his cause in the world.

And remember, it's not about finding the perfect church with all the bells and whistles. It's about finding a community where God is moving, where discipleship is prioritized, and where Christ is at the center of it all.

So, wherever you are on your journey, take a step today. Choose to be part of something bigger than yourself. Choose to be a disciple of Jesus.

Jesus and his disciples find themselves in a bit of hot water with the Pharisees over Sabbath observance. But Jesus flips the script, teaching us a valuable lesson about holiness.

Holiness isn't about rigid rules or outward appearances. It's about the heart. Jesus challenges the Pharisees' narrow view of holiness, reminding us that it's about meeting the needs of people, not adhering to strict regulations.

Think about it – how often do we see people flaunt their "holiness" while neglecting to show love and compassion to those around them? Jesus calls us to a different kind of holiness – one rooted in love and service.

One of the beautiful aspects of Sabbath is the opportunity it provides for communion with Christ. It's a time to set aside distractions and bask in the presence of our Savior. Just as God rested on the seventh day, we too find rest and renewal in Him.

So, how can we apply this in our lives today? Firstly, let our practices be a reflection of love. If our spiritual disciplines only serve to puff us up with self-righteousness, we've missed the mark. And secondly, let's be consumed with Jesus. Let's prioritize intimacy with Him above all else.

Practicing Sabbath isn't about legalism or duty – it's about joyfully entering into God's rest and experiencing His presence in a deeper way. So, I challenge you to carve out time for Sabbath in your life. Whether it's a day of rest, a meal shared with loved ones, or simply moments of solitude with God – let's embrace Sabbath as a gift from our loving Father.

When we Sabbath well, we love well. So, let's commit to cultivating a heart of love and service, mirroring the example of our Savior. As we rest in Him, may we find the strength and grace to pour out His love onto others.

Together, let's walk in the transforming holiness of Jesus, embracing a Sabbath experience that draws us closer to Him and to one another.

But friends, it's time to reclaim the power and purpose behind this sacred act.

Picture this: you've waded into the waters of baptism, perhaps more than once, searching for clarity and connection. But amidst the splashes and echoes of tradition, have you truly grasped the heart of what it means to follow Jesus?

For some, baptism is like a Facebook status update, announcing to the world, "I'm back with Jesus again!" But let's be real – faith isn't about public declarations or scoring spiritual points. It's about a personal journey of surrender and transformation.

Imagine standing at the Jordan River, where John the Baptist beckoned seekers to repentance and renewal. There, amidst the flow of water and the whispers of history, Jesus himself stepped forward, igniting a ripple of divine revelation.

As we trace the threads of scripture, we uncover a tapestry of redemption woven through the ages. From the chaos of creation to the Exodus from slavery, water has been a symbol of cleansing and deliverance. And in the baptism of Jesus, these ancient patterns converge, revealing him as the fulfillment of prophecy and promise.

Think about it: as Jesus emerged from the waters, the heavens opened, echoing the dawn of creation. The Spirit descended like a dove, mirroring the dove sent forth by Noah to find dry land. And in that moment, Jesus stood as the ultimate High Priest, bridging the gap between humanity and divinity.

But here's the plot twist: Jesus didn't just get baptized for kicks. He modeled a path of radical discipleship, inviting us to follow him through the waters of death and into new life. It's not about earning brownie points or securing a spot in the spiritual VIP lounge. It's about laying down our old selves and rising anew, clothed in the likeness of Christ.

So, where do you stand in this cosmic drama of redemption? Are you content with religious rituals and surface-level spirituality? Or are you ready to dive deeper, embracing the call to follow Jesus wherever he leads?

If you're wrestling with these questions, know that you're not alone. Whether you're a seasoned saint or a skeptical seeker, there's room for you in the journey of faith. So take a moment to pause, to pray, and to ponder the next step on your path of transformation.
Maybe it's a decision to reaffirm your commitment to Christ, to rekindle the flames of faith that have grown dim. Or perhaps it's a call to repentance, a turning away from old habits and a turning toward the light of grace.

Whatever your story, whatever your struggle, know that the waters of baptism are waiting, not as a trophy or a badge of honor, but as a doorway to a deeper relationship with the divine.

So let me leave you with this question: will you follow Jesus? Not as a religious obligation or a cultural tradition, but as a radical act of surrender and devotion. The choice is yours, friend. The journey awaits.

Maybe it was agreeing to help move a piano or thinking you were going to see a vampire movie only to end up in a theater filled with Twilight fans. We've all been there, right?

In life, before we commit to something, we need details and expectations. This holds true not only in our everyday interactions but also in matters of faith. How many of us have identified as Christian without truly understanding what it means to live for Jesus day in and day out?

In many cases, our understanding of Christianity has been shaped by cultural norms or the traditions of the church we grew up in. Some of us were baptized as babies and told we were good to go for heaven. Others were led through a prayer and dunked in water without fully grasping the significance of what it meant to follow Jesus.

The tension arises when our expectations of Christianity clash with the reality of what it means to be a follower of Christ. We may find ourselves labeling Christians as hypocrites because they don't live up to our preconceived notions of what a Christian should be.

To truly understand Christianity, we need to delve into the core of who Jesus is. In the Gospel of Mark, we are introduced to Jesus as the servant king, fully God and fully man, yet humble and serving others. Unlike the expected warrior king like David, Jesus brings God's kingdom not through violence and conquest but through love, forgiveness, and healing.

But who is this Jesus? Is he the long-awaited Messiah, the one who came to free us from sin, death, and hell? And if he is, how does that impact our lives on a daily basis? These are questions we must wrestle with, for our understanding of Jesus shapes our entire worldview.

As we journey through the Gospel of Mark together, let's explore the details of Jesus' life and ministry, setting aside our preconceived notions and allowing the truth of who he is to transform us from the inside out. Whether you're a skeptic, a seeker, or a seasoned believer, let's embark on this journey together, seeking to know Jesus more deeply and to live out our faith authentically.

So, who is this Jesus, and what does it mean to follow him? Let's find out together.

As the new year unfolds, many of us find ourselves eager to embark on transformative journeys that deepen our spiritual connection. At Generation Church, we are gearing up for the 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting, a time-honored tradition that has proven to be a catalyst for profound change in the lives of our community members. In this blog post, we will guide you through the preparations and provide insights into the different fasting options, reflections, and practical steps to make the most of this sacred season.

Understanding the Commitment:
The decision to partake in the 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting is deeply personal and multifaceted. As a church, our purpose is to provide various pathways for engagement, understanding that the journey toward God is unique for each individual. We have chosen to connect our fast directly to food, drawing inspiration from numerous biblical examples. Richard J. Foster aptly describes biblical fasting as a means to fix our eyes on Jesus and attune ourselves to God's voice and direction.

Three Fasting Options:
We recognize that everyone is at a different stage in their spiritual journey, so we offer three distinct fasting options:

Varied Weeks: A commitment to fasting evolves throughout the three weeks, starting with a focus on liquids, followed by a single meal per day, and concluding with intentional prayer during the normal eating period.

Varied Meals: This involves fasting from all meals except for one during the day, allowing flexibility in daily routines.

Altered Diet: This option includes fasting with altered restrictions, such as the Daniel Fast, eliminating specific food categories like dairy, poultry, meat, breads, and sugars.

Reflection and Preparation:
Before diving into the fast, reflect on Matthew 6:9-13 and ask God to guide you in choosing the right fasting option. Consider pushing beyond your comfort zone, as fasting is meant to be transformative rather than convenient. Reflect on your motives and pray for intentional engagement with the Lord throughout the 21 days.

Challenges and Expectations:
Fasting comes with its set of challenges, both emotional and physical. Heightened emotional sensitivity, changes in energy levels, and intense hunger are common experiences. Acknowledge these challenges, and use them as reminders to turn to prayer. Remember, the discomfort is an opportunity for the Holy Spirit to work within you.

Three Ways to Prepare:
In the days leading up to the fast, focus on preparing your prayer, mind, and heart:

Prepare Your Prayer: Engage in unified prayers for the church, immerse yourself in the reading plan, and find a supportive community for prayer.

Prepare Your Mind: Anticipate how the fast will impact your daily life, seek the Lord's guidance for mental fortitude, and meditate on scriptures reflecting God's faithfulness.

Prepare Your Heart: Identify potential areas of difficulty, confess and repent of sins, and seek unity in your relationships.

Final Preparations: As the 21 Days approach, take practical steps to prepare your body, schedule, and responses:

Prepare Your Body: Stay hydrated, consume healthier foods leading up to the fast, and consult with a healthcare professional if necessary.

Prepare Your Schedule: Plan when and how you will pray and consume liquids. Discuss the upcoming days with your household.

Prepare Your Response: While maintaining humility, be prepared to share your fasting journey when asked, emphasizing the private nature of the commitment.

We are excited and hopeful for the transformation that will unfold during the 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. As we collectively seek God's presence, let us embrace this season with open hearts, expecting the Lord to exceed our expectations. May this journey be a time of spiritual growth, renewal, and a deepened connection with the divine. We're with you every step of the way, believing that God's power will work wonders within us.

For more resources on Prayer and Fasting, click here.
